About Us

The map below shows the current Headwaters Sanctuary trail system. Mouse over the aerial map to see the main Sanctuary trailhead and our meeting location for volunteer workdays.

The Headwaters Sanctuary is a work-in-progress as far as visitor use is concerned. Some trails exist and others are under development. You may enjoy what trails you find, on foot only, please.

If you’d like to help us further our work at the Headwaters, you would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Please volunteer and donate!

For more information, call us at 210-828-2224 ext. 280 or email .

Mouse over the aerial view below to see the Sanctuary in the context of our neighbors in the "headwaters basin."

Directions: Access to the Sanctuary is shown off the Highway 281 access road just north of Hildebrand. Turn right off the access road into Incarnate Word, turn left at the stop sign, and follow the road as it winds down and around and over a small bridge to another stop sign. Go straight through the stop sign past the UIW baseball fields and look left for the toolshed near the entrance to the Headwaters Sanctuary. This is also where we meet for work days. You’ll see a big “Welcome to the Headwaters Sanctuary” banner. Park in reserved spots on our regular Wednesday Volunteer Work Days.

On Fridays through Sundays, parking spots are usually readily available and no parking permit is needed. However, on Mondays -- Thursdays during the school year, a parking permit is needed. (A permit does not guarantee a spot!) You may request a parking permit by contacting our office at (210) 828-2224 ext. 232. If you visit on your own time without a permit, please know you are most welcome – but you are also responsible for any parking tickets you may get.
